P.G .Department of Molecular Biosciences has imported an advanced model of PCR from Eppendorf,Germany at a cost of Rs.6,25,000/.Bishop Heber Collge,Trichy is the first college in this region to get the Mastercycler  Pro S , an advanced model of PCR from Eppendorf ,Germany. Dr.R.Selvam,Coordinator of the programme informs that the vapo.protect ^TM technology developed by the company reduces the evaporation to a minimum and leads to improved reproducibility and specificity at the rim and in the corners of the block. The extreme high heating and cooling rates of this model gives the  highest temperature control speed due to silver block. Further, the SteadySlope® technology developed by the company ensures that the heating and cooling ramp rates are identical in both gradient and normal operation. The self test function of the model provides the ability to check the peltier elements of the thermal block easily.  The control panel is user friendly and this model can be upgraded to real-time PCR. As  reproducibility, specificity and speed are the prime requirements in any PCR application, this model is an ideal choice for advanced programmes like Molecular Biosciences.

Along with other sophisticated instruments like Jasco’s UV-VIS spectrophotometer and Alpha Innotech’s Gel documentation system, the Department has now fully equipped labs for advanced practicals in Molecular Biology. The Department has also plans for short term training programmes on instrumentation for students and staff.
